Deutsch für Anfänger - German for beginners
Here's a little list of some of my favourite expressions in German. Some of them can be very useful at times ;)
1. ACH SO! (Alright!) Pronounced: ack-SAW It's often used when someone explains something to you and you finally understood it. VERY VERY USEFUL, actually they say it all the time. The more enthusiastically you say it, the better it will sound.
2. KEINE AHNUNG (No idea) Pronounced: kie-neh-AH-nung This has definitely been my favourite expression since I started learning German... and the most useful one.
3. VON WEGEN! (The hell! / No freakin' way! / My ass! / Like fuck!) Pronounced: fon-VE-gen (g as in get) You usually say it when someone says something that just can't be true. Example: A: Das hat 300 Euro gekostet. (This cost 300 Euro) B: Von wegen 300 Euro! Wenigstens 500! (300 Euro my ass! At least it cost 500!)
4. ICH GLAUBE SCHON (I think so) Pronounced: eesh-GLOW-beh-SHON (ow as in down) There's nothing to explain about this one...
5. BITTE OHNE KOHLENSÄURE (Please, still water) Pronounced: BIT-teh-AW-neh-KAW-lehn-soy-reh If like me, you can't stand sparkling water (Oh come on, that shite *ain't* water! You feel even thirstier after drinking it!), this will be useful if you go to a restaurant... and you know what to look for on the labels if you buy water.
6. NEIN, WIRKLICH? (Oh really?) Pronounced: nine-VIRK-lish My favourite expression, not only in German, but in every single language in this world! It is particularly effective if you say it after someone said something hugely obvious and you give it the right intonation (it has to sound like it was a once-in-a-lifetime revelation).
Well, I think with this you should be able to survive here in Germany. If you have any more suggestions, don't hesitate to tell me :)
