Inner Desires: Chapter XVI
16.
The brunette raised her head and propped herself up with her elbows. She climbed up the bed until she was at the same level as her girlfriend. Kimberly looked pretty tired, her eyes half-closed as she pulled the thick duvet up to cover her body. Sharon trailed a finger up her side; then she wrapped an arm around her thin waistline and searched the other woman's lips.
"No!" the blonde pulled away a bit abruptly "Not now... you taste weird."
"Oh... sorry, honey" Sharon bit her lip "I keep forgetting it. But it's so hard for me not to kiss you afterwards."
Kim merely nodded. Her forehead was slightly tense, as though she was annoyed. Yet the other woman interpreted it as tiredness, which was understandable. Usually, they didn't spend the night together on week days, but the brunette had insisted so much... On that evening, they were celebrating six months since they started their relationship.
Sharon slid out of the bed and put on her maroon robe. As she fixed her hair, looking in the mirror, she announced:
"I'm going to the bathroom. Don't fall asleep before I can kiss you goodnight!"
"I'll try" the blonde yawned.
Before opening the door to leave, Sharon turned. Seeing Kimberly about to pass out any minute brought a smile to her lips. Many times she had watched her while she was sleeping, and she found that sight truly sweet. Her girlfriend's soft features looked even more girly then. Trying not to make much noise, she closed her bedroom door behind herself and made her way to the bathroom to brush her teeth. She wanted a goodnight kiss from Kim.
A soft light from the living-room caught her attention. She followed it and saw Johanna wrapped in a blanket on the couch. The young girl had fallen asleep with a thick textbook on her lap. An empty cup of coffee was lying on the table in front of her.
"Looks like caffeine didn't help you much" she joked in her ear in a soft voice.
Johanna opened her eyes, giving a start. Her watch said it was almost 1 am. Realizing that she had fallen asleep, she growled.
"Oh, shit!" she complained.
"Why don't you go to bed?" Sharon asked, sitting down next to her.
"I can't. I have an important exam soon, and I didn't have much time to study today."
"But still, you should go to bed. I don't think staying up late will help you much, especially if you're so tired."
The redhead sighed.
"Well, you have to thank your dear girlfriend for that. I spent all afternoon cleaning the kitchen. Speaking of which... could you guys please not make such a mess next time you cook together? Or at least clean it up afterwards, even if it's my turn."
"Oh, I'm sorry" Sharon bit her lip "I was going do it, but Kim wanted to go to the movies, and we were already late..."
"Yeah, she always has an excuse."
Sharon frowned. Her roommate slid a hand out of the blanket and put it on her shoulder.
"Look, I know it's not your fault. You always do your part here at home, but I can't stand what she does" Johanna explained "I have no problem with her coming over to see you and hanging out with us. But I know she hates me, and she shows it in every possible way."
"That's not true" the brunette gasped "I'm sure-"
The younger girl held out her hand, telling her to stop.
"I have nothing against her at all. She's your girlfriend and makes you happy, so I'm fine with her. But for some mysterious reason, she always makes the biggest mess whenever she knows it's my turn."
"You're sounding a bit paranoid, Jo."
"Will you tell her to be a bit more careful anyway?"
Sharon nodded, sighing. Her friends and her girlfriend were two of the most important things in her life. She needed both parts to live in harmony. Why would Kim dislike Johanna? It made no sense to her. Even if she still had that little kiss they had shared in her mind, there was no reason for her to be jealous, and she had proved it to her in a thousand different ways in the past six months. Johanna had to be wrong.
"Why don't you go to bed?" she said softly "Your mind needs a rest."
The redhead rolled her eyes and inhaled. Her roommate didn't believe her, or at least she didn't want to. In any case, she was right that she needed to sleep. It'd be impossible for her to learn anything when she was so tired.
"Goodnight" she pushed the blanket aside and stood up from the couch.
Her flatmate watched her go and decided that it was also time for her to go back to bed before it was impossible to wake Kim up. She switched off the small table lamp Johanna had been using and made her way to the bedroom in the dark.
Sliding under the covers, she fumbled around until she found Kimberly's body and wrapped an arm around her. The other girl groaned gently in her sleep. Although she wouldn't get a proper goodnight kiss, Sharon searched her cheek and pecked it tenderly. It annoyed her a little to see that she had just brushed her teeth in vain, but she knew it was better not to annoy her girlfriend when she was exhausted. One of the things she had learnt in the months they had spent together was that Kim could be a real sweetheart as long as she wasn't tired or in a bad mood.
That, however, didn't change the way she saw the blonde at all. She was head over heels in love with her, and it seemed to increase each day. Although she tended to become fond of people quite fast and easily, her feelings for Kimberly were much more intense than any she had had before. In her eyes, their relationship was perfect. Her beauty, her personality, the way they understood each other with no need for words, the way she made love to her... she couldn't name a single thing she didn't like about her girlfriend. Finally, she had found what she had been looking for all her life - someone who made her existence special. Even the hardest days, in which she had trouble getting out of bed, were worth the effort just knowing that she would see her later. And every day she reminded Kim, both with words and actions, how much she cared about her.
Any of Sharon's friends could tell you that Kimberly had definitely changed her life. The brunette was radiant with joy and much more confident, which made her even more beautiful than she already was. While some of them had been rather shocked at the beginning, all of them had accepted the relationship with no problem. Now they were completely used to seeing Sharon and Kimberly cuddling and kissing constantly whenever they went out together. For some of them, it was even a nice sight. They actually made a cute couple; sometimes they could be a bit cheesy, but Kim seemed to make the Dutch girl happier than any of the men she had ever been with.
Only two of them were not exactly enthusiastic about this relationship, but they would never say it aloud. Although she tried hard to get along with Kimberly and to think that she was good for Sharon, a certain redhead had a bad feeling about the two of them. Johanna wasn't completely honest when she told her flatmate that she had nothing against the blonde. She didn't like her at all, and she couldn't tell why. There was just something strange about her. Yet no-one seemed to agree with her. Marco had often asked her whether she was jealous of them whenever she brought up the topic. In the end, the young student had decided to keep quiet and stop discussing it with anyone. Still, she was sure it had nothing to do with envy, or with the fact that she knew Kim disliked her. If she weren't too practical to believe in hunches and vibrations, she would have said that her intuition was trying to tell her that something wasn't right and Sharon would end up getting hurt. Maybe it was just the fact that her girlfriend seemed a lot less passionate.
The other person, as it was to be expected, was Tarja. Yet she was determined not to show it. Both women were her friends, and she had to be happy for them, even when she would trade herself for the blonde with no hesitation. Her main reason, though, was not jealousy. Just like Johanna, she could sense that it was destined to go wrong. She herself was not the type for stable relationships; her need for personal space and her fear of co-dependence always tended to get in the way. Of course, Kimberly and Sharon were not like her; they actually seemed to be really into each other and willing to commit themselves. In any case, it was clear to her that the Dutch girl was the motherly kind, a wife; she needed someone to take care of, and also to be loved and protected. She wasn't sure Kimberly was the perfect one for that job. The lawyer was so private, so distant... even though they both were pretty close, Tarja couldn't help but feel that she was hiding something. Just the way they had met for the first time had been weird. Her impression of Kim was that she was one of those who hate to be alone and get together with the first person - let's not forget her sexual orientation - that shows interest in them... and then goes off when she finds someone better. Hopefully, it would be difficult enough to top Sharon...
In the meantime, she was happy with her very own blonde, who she had started seeing. Liv Isaksen was definitely good company and, much to her surprise, not as easy as she appeared. So far, they had gone out together about five times, not counting when they had met in the choir rehearsals or in the gym, and the furthest they had got was making out once. Yet the Norwegian kept sending flirtatious signs. Such a tease! Tarja had to admit that keeping her guessing wasn't a bad strategy, especially because it was the perfect way not to lose her attention. Only time would tell...
